What do physiotherapists do?
Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal conditions. Physiotherapists assist and educate their patients to regain full participation in sports and activities of daily living. Our goal is to assist and encourage quality movement and hence improved quality of life, no matter what the condition. Physiotherapists have a huge role to play with all age groups.
What other professionals do physiotherapists work along with?
Physiotherapists work closely with your physician to plan, implement and adapt treatment based on imaging and other diagnostic testing. Physiotherapists are team players and work closely with chiropractors, massage therapists and kinesiologists to ensure the best outcome possible for their patients. Physiotherapists also have the skills to work with sports teams, coaches and managers.
What conditions do physiotherapists treat?
What type of treatment techniques do physiotherapists use?
Primarily, physiotherapists try to alleviate symptoms initially by using their hands and performing joint mobilizations and soft tissue release techniques in the affected area. Often we notice there is some type of joint/muscle/nerve dysfunction that has led to this injury and we almost always attempt to address this. We educate the patient on body mechanics and attempt to correct this by prescribing rehab exercises. Additional training in the areas of intramuscular stimulation and clinical rehab Pilates is often beneficial for almost all populations.
Do you need a referral from your family doctor to see a physiotherapist?
No. Physiotherapists are legislated as primary contact healthcare professionals. That means that you can consult with them directly.
