What is Cold Laser and Therapeutic Ultrasound?

Cold Laser Therapy and Therapeutic Ultrasound are two tools used by physiotherapists that can aid in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and pain management. They use different forms of energy to target and heal specific tissues in the body in order to promote injury recovery and pain relief.

How do Cold Laser and Ultrasound tools work?

Ultrasound works by sending an electric current through crystals found in the ultrasound probe. The probe vibrates, causing waves to travel through the skin to the body’s tissues. This can aid in healing soft tissue injuries by increasing blood flow and accelerating the rate and efficiency of the body’s natural healing response.

Cold Laser, also known as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), involves the use of relatively low light energy to aid in tissue repair. Cold Laser is used to decrease pain and inflammation, stimulate collagen metabolism and wound healing, and promote the healing of fractures.

What injuries can benefit from Cold Laser & Ultrasound?

Cold Laser and Therapeutic Ultrasound treatments can be beneficial for a range of injuries and conditions, primarily those that involve soft tissues, musculoskeletal structures and pain management.

Injuries & conditions that can benefit from Cold Laser Therapy include:

  • Soft tissue injuries, such as tendonitis, ligament sprains, muscle strains and plantar fasciitis
  • Pain management for conditions such as fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Wound and fracture healing
  • Post-surgical healing

Injuries & conditions that can benefit from Therapeutic Ultrasound include:

  • Tendon injuries, such as Achilles tendonitis and rotator cuff injuries
  • Muscle strains
  • Joint inflammation
  • Post-injury scar tissue formation
  • Pain management to reduce swelling

Both treatment methods are non-invasive and pain-free. They are often combined with other treatments, such as manual therapy and exercises for strength/flexibility, to generate the best results. It is always best to speak with your physiotherapist about whether these modalities are right for you.
